SCMP.com – Homes destroyed as storms batter coast

SCMP reports: “Twin storms that struck the east coast yesterday claimed at least two lives and damaged thousands of houses. Eastern provinces were warned to expect more torrential rains in the coming days.

“Meteorologists said Typhoon Damrey, the strongest typhoon to make landfall north of the Yangtze River since 1949, was unlikely to hit Beijing, which is still recovering from a deluge last month that claimed at least 78 lives.

“Some 867,000 people in 10 provinces had to flee their homes after Damrey and Severe Tropical Storm Saola – which made landfall farther south – pounded a big stretch of coast with powerful winds and heavy rains.”
