Due to US and Indian influence, in 2015, the newly-elected Sri Lankan president put on hold the Colombo port project that his predecessor awarded to a Chinese company, but now due to the country’s economic difficulties and the lack of alternative from India or the US, the Chinese company has been told to resume construction of the project.

It proves that verbal strength has to be supported by financial strength.

Even India is now afraid of Chinese economic reprisal. For all his talks, Modi’s Indian miracle depends on Chinese economic assistance. Even the American has no choice but to rely on Chinese capitals, with Obama was forced to gag Admiral Harris, the American Tojo, in order to avoid offending Xi Jinping. Apparently, he has to swallow his pride and let Xi dictated him in order to secure economic deal with China.

Sounds like Sri Lanka has been sitting on the fence and hoping to secure benefits from either side. Sri Lankans should consider themselves lucky that the country is a strategic point of interest for China, otherwise No Colombo Port Project No Financial Assistance.

The same applies to the Philippines. Between the US and China, Philippines has a much better chance of development through loans and investments from China than from the US. Why it allows jokers with a “pirate” mentlity like Albert Del Rosario to hijack Philippines socio-economic development with his short-sighted narrow interest “foreign policy” is beyond rationality. Unless of course, CIA is in the background as always in all the happenings in the world.

The PH Govt. could be serving their own ‘self interest’ rather than the citizens. Why PH enjoys servitude towards (especially) the US and turning the country into a Tinderbox when a military confrontation breaks out is difficult to understand. As you say, having a narrow minded shortsightedness. As for loans, I suppose they can borrow via AIIB and ADB. Should China decide to engineer and improvise Huanyan Island – an important strategic point in the SCS, the PH will lose lost All their counterbalance strategy. The US might as well pack their bags and go home and PH will be a backward nation again.
