In its report titled “Disclosure of photos of auxiliary facilities and airport on Yongshu Reef”, China’s mil.huanqiu.com, a website of Global Times under Chinese Government’s mouthpiece the People’s Daily, published the above photos of the city China has built on the reclaimed land on Yongshu (Fiery Cross) Reef.

The report justifies China’s landing of a military transport on Yongshu Reef Airport by saying that Y-8 transports have been carrying routine patrols in the South China Sea; therefore, it was able to come to the airport to save the seriously sick workers much quicker to save time. The port and airport on Yongshu Reef will provide similar services for ships and fishing boats in trouble in the South China Sea.

However, it also says that the landing of a military aircraft proves that the airport can be used for military purpose. If fighter jets are deployed there, they will ensure air supremacy within 500 km of the Reef as fighter jets have range from 500 to 1,000 km.
