While building lots of new warships, China is upgrading its old warships by replacing new powerful weapons and equipment for old ones. The above are photos on the upgrading of the Shenzhen, an old Type 051B destroyer and the Guangzhou, an old Type 052B destroyer. The photos are provided by mil.huanqiu.com in its reports today.

Other two Type 052B destroyers, the Hangzhou and the Fuzhou, are also being upgraded.

The website says that the ships’ old missile launchers on its deck will be replaced with 32-tube vertical launch system (VLS) for the Shenzhen and 32-48-tube VSL for the other three destroyers. HQ-16 air defense missiles 4 times powerful and 16 times longer-range will replace the old ones. It is believed that YJ-12A anti-ship cruise missiles will replace the old ones on those warships. In addition, the four destroyers will all have China’s type 1130 close-in weapon system for missile defense.

The Guangzhou is an old type destroyer? That can’t be right. She’s barely 5 years old. It is understandable if she receives modernization refit, but she is by no way old.
The Hangzhou and the Fuzhou are not even 052B. Both are Russian-built Sovremennyy-class that were ordered hastily from unfinished Soviet destroyer hulls to counter US marauding aircraft carriers on Taiwan Strait. They may have old Soviet technology, but they are by no way obsolete. They are carrier hunter-killers equipped with Moskit missiles to hunt and sink American carriers. To this day the American still has no defense against those old Moskit missiles. Since their commissions, no American carriers dared to put gunboat diplomacy display any more, and even being pushed away from Taiwan Strait onto the edge of SCS. Their new upgrades would only make them more potent and efficient despite lacking stealth features.
