The idea of loitering attack missile was invented by the US. It is called XM501 Non-Line-of-Sight Launch System (NLOS-LS), a combination of missile and drone. The missile, instead of hitting a specific target chosen when it is launched, cruises in the air like a drone and hit a target when it finds one.

The US had been developing the system for almost a decade but gave up in 2011 as it was too expensive. China has picked up the idea and obtained the fierce weapons for its army that the US has failed to obtain.

China’s loitering attack missile CM-501G and WS43 are super ammunitions China has obtained to surpass the US. It is launched by rocket artillery vertically with a range respectively of 40 km and 60 km. It can stay in the air for 30 minutes to perform reconnaissance and identify, track and hit fixed or moving target with a 20-kg warhead.

Installed with an anti-artillery radar, the system can accurately identify and destroy enemy artillery whether fixed or moving. It, therefore, is an artillery killer.

    I had said before, China should develop Loitering Floating Cruise Missiles, based off UUV’s to hit US ships from the back, sides, and front. Floating on the sea surface like buoys or just a bit below and activate by satellites. This require far less energy than the aerial type which can only loiter for a very short time with small payload. Longer loitering time and longer range, payload is key to make this kind of weapon lethal.

    It’s a shame that the US came up with the idea, R & D for a decade, became mentally defunct and financially incapable. This is an incredible breakthrough by China’s military science in R & D.
