China’s Homegrown Wholly Electric Propelled Submarine Salvage ShipPosted: October 23, 2016
A Global Times reporter recently visited China’s homegrown wholly electric propelled submarine salvage ship, the Changdao, and was amazed at its marvelous functions.
The ship adopts world best marine submarine salvage technology, is equipped with high-tech search, detection and measuring equipment and has kept Asian manned deep submerge test record.
It is wholly electric propelled for accurate speed adjustment. Its six propellers enable it to go forth, backward and sidewise and change direction at the same spot. It is able to be positioned at sea with its own driving force and can accurately remain at designated position without anchor.
It has won profuse praise abroad when it changed direction at the same spot at a foreign port.
The ship has advanced submarine salvage equipment including a deep submerge life boat that can operate at the depth of 500 meters and a remote controlled submersible that can operate 1,000 meters deep.
In order to find its target as soon as possible in great depth with zero visibility, the ship has various types of lateral scan sonar, video sonar and underwater robot (remote controlled submersible).
Its deep-sea life boat may connect with a submarine in trouble after adjustment of its pressure equal to the submarine and carry 18 of the submarine crew to the surface from a maximum depth of 500 meters each time.
In addition to the deep-sea life boat, the ship has a bell-shaped salvage vessel that can also connect with a submarine in trouble and rescue its crew.
No such vessel has been used since 1939 when the US used one to salvage the crew of its damaged submarine. China’s bell-shaped salvage vessel has passed 340-meter depth test.
