New J-17 Fighter-bomber Given to Chinese Military Like Adding Wings to a Tiger

China’s new J-17 figher-bomber

Recently a Canadian military magazine reports that China has made new progress in developing its J-17 fighter-bomber based on Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber.

China lacks bombers in its air force. It has reached the limit in improving its H-6 bombers; therefore, it has only produced a small number of H-6K bombers, an improved version of H-6 that carries cruise missiles.

China develops a Chinese version of Russia’s Su-34 due also to the slow development of its homegrown heavy bombers.

Chinese version of Su-34 can carry 8 tons ammunition, only a little less than H-6, but is much quicker; therefore, J-17 may be a good replacement for H-6 for China to maintain strong air-to-ground fire power.

Wind Tunnel Test of Chinese Version of Su-34 Bomber Finished Soo

Russian Military Industry Complex net reported on April 9, 2013: China is developing J-17, a tactic bomber similar to Russian Su-34. The reporter has learnt from Russian Zhukovsky Central Aerodynamic Research Institute that at present tunnel test for the model of J-17 bomber will soon be completed

China has already had the experience of developing and manufacturing J-11B and J-16 fighters (respectively copies of Russian Su-27 and Su-30). Aviation experts believe, J-17, the Chinese version of Su-34, can be used to replace some of and strengthen H-6 bombers.

Photographs obtained by spy satellites show that recently there has been significant reduction of the number of H-6 bombers at Chinese airfields, which perhaps indicates the decommissioning and destruction of the H-6 bombers made earlier. Meanwhile, it also proves that there is limited room for improvement in those aircrafts. The first flight of China’s H-6 bomber was carried out in 1953

Experts point out: Development and manufacture of new type of heavy bomber are very difficult jobs. For China’s aircraft industry, the complicated problem is the unavailability of China-made powerful turbojet engine. We cannot exclude the possibility that China began to develop its J-17 tactic bomber in 1998 as China played the footage of the model of an aircraft similar to Su-34 at Airshow China that year.

Experts estimate the combat load of Chinese vision of Su-34 may reach 8 tons. If that is the case, J-17’s maximum load is a little lighter than H-6 bomber (9 tons). It in theory may carry long-range cruise missile.

Russia is also interested in selling export version of S-34 aircraft to China. Chinese source believes that commissioning of Su-34/J-17 can greatly enhance Chinese air force’s attack potential and improve it to make it satisfy world advanced standards.

Previously, there was the report that China, in addition, was developing J-19 heavy bomber on the basis of J-11B.
