SCMP says in its report “‘Donald Trump is ignorant and one-China negotiations won’t happen’, state media says” today, “In an editorial published on Monday, the Global Times, slammed the US president-elect for being “as ignorant as a child in terms of foreign policy” as it ruled out negotiation over the one-China policy.

Beijing would have no reason to “put peace above using force to take back Taiwan” if Trump abandoned the policy, which recognises Taiwan as part of China, stated the editorial in the state-run newspaper published by the Chinese Communist Party’s mouthpiece People’s Daily.

Trump had on Sunday questioned during an interview on US news programme Fox News Sunday whether Washington should continue with the policy if Beijing did not make concessions on trade and other issues.

Trump is shrewd to know that Taiwan is the only bargaining chip weighty enough to use. However it is a risky one that may give rise to a war in Taiwan Strait that may involve the US.

However, brink-of-war is a strategy often applied in world diplomacy to achieve what cannot be achieved by other means.

Moreover, Trump has gained a renown for making self-contradictory statements to enable him to reverse what he has said. Anyway, by raising the one-China issue, Trump is testing China’s negotiation bottom line.

I will give the full text of Global Times’ editorial below. It is worth noting that the editorial says nothing about the concessions Trump wants. I have mentioned in my previous post today titled “Trump Makes Clear His Intention to Use Taiwan to Pressure China” that there is no difficulties for China to give the concessions. However, Trump has to pay attention to China’s dignity in his efforts to get the concessions.

‘One China’ policy cannot be used for bargaining
Source:Global Times Published: 2016/12/12 12:38:39

On Sunday, US President-elect Donald Trump made some surprising remarks about the Taiwan question again. When interviewed by the Fox News network, he said, “I fully understand the ‘One China’ policy, but I don’t know why we have to be bound by a ‘One China’ policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.” From these remarks, Western media believes that Trump may use the policy to force China to make a compromise on trade.

It seems that such an analysis is credible. During a phone call with Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen, Trump called Tsai “Taiwan President,” making many people suspect that the businessman-turned US President-elect will use the One China policy, the cornerstone of Sino-US relations, as a bargaining chip to peddle America’s short-term interests.

With Trump’s new remarks on Taiwan, many people marveled at Trump’s commercial thinking and naivety for diplomacy. The One China policy has gone through the ages since the Richard Nixon administration. In addition, the policy has become a fundamental principle of international order. Leaders all around the world, including US leaders, understand the importance of the policy.

The One China policy is not for selling. Trump thinks that everything can be valued and, as long as his leverage is strong enough, he can sell or buy. If a price can be put on the US Constitution, will the American people sell their country’s constitution and implement the political systems of Saudi Arabia or Singapore?

Trump needs to learn to handle foreign affairs modestly, especially the China-US relationship. More importantly, a hard struggle against Trump is needed to let him know that China and other world powers cannot be easily taken advantage of.

If Trump gave up the One China policy, publicly supported Taiwan independence and wantonly sold weapons to Taiwan, China would have no grounds to partner with Washington on international affairs and contain forces hostile to the US. In response to Trump’s provocations, Beijing could offer support, even military assistance to US foes.

The One China policy has maintained peace and prosperity in Taiwan, and, if abandoned, cross-Straits ties would see a real storm. China would introduce a series of new Taiwan polices, and may not prioritize peaceful reunification over a military takeover if Trump insisted on his provocations. The US has no control over the Straits, and Trump is naïve to think he can use the One China policy as a bargaining chip to win economic benefits from China.

Eventually, those who advocate Taiwan independence will tremble. Taiwanese authorities may regret to being a pawn of Trump and his radical policies. And Tsai will refuse to answer Trump’s call some day. Nothing is impossible if the Trump administration goes too far.

In the meantime, it’s very likely that Trump may not have put too much thought into it. He is no geopolitical maniac, but just has little experience in diplomacy. He doesn’t understand how dangerous it can be when he involves the US in such an explosive game. After all, this requires some personal experience.

Given his inexperience, Trump is easily subject to the hawkish advisers around him. He assumes whatever he says doesn’t matter before he takes office. We will learn more about how he interprets the One China policy after he is sworn in. Meanwhile, China needs to be fully armed and prepared to take a Sino-US rollercoaster relationship together with Trump. And many others in the world will probably also need to fasten their seatbelts.

I like to look at it this way, the flip side of saying he wants something back for the one china policy also means he is willing to sell Taiwan down the drain if the price is right! Therefore a schrewed and smart chinese leader could well make full use of it! Of course this has to be done with clear public stand that the one china policy is not negotiable, as sovereignty is not negotiable. But find a way or price that Trump will sell Taiwan down the drain!

Even within his own party many prominant Republicans including Jon McCaine opposses Trump. The guy is seen as out of control and inexperience. His overture to Russia and recognising the annexation of Crimea and ending the sanction againt Moscow is fundamentally against the core interest of America. Likewise his percieved breaking off the One China Policy is against the core interest of America in bringing China around to assisting its strategic goal in policing the world without confrontation.

One must remember before 1979 when America has diplomatic ties with Taiwan and not China the Chinese has no hesitation attacking America militarily and supporting other countries militarily to do the same as seen in Korean War and Vietnam War. Today China is much more powerful.

Trump should remember his legitimacy is not quite well established, much like he questioned Obama birth certificate, the world can also question whether he win the election by Russia’s hacking and FBI last minute investigation of Hillary help him win.

Trump Lost over 2 million popular vote, yet he won the electrol college. Given these facts, Trump should not behave like he got the mandate to disrupt many previous policies, including the One China Policy.

We may well have an Illegitimate President Trump Not of the United States of America, but of the United States of Russia. Without Russian hacking, where will Trump be?

Basically, this Trump Dumb Dump wants Beijing to offer concessions on trade issues for the US to recognise the one China policy. This irresponsible old head thinks Taiwan can be traded like a real estate property between the buyer and seller. If Tsai Ing-Wen has any shame or self respect, she should be aware that Trump is treating the Taiwanese as second class citizens or like animals with a herding mentality.

In other words, if Beijing provides Trump Dumb Dump with a trade concession, he would (on behalf of US) recognise the One China policy and herd the Taiwanese animals back to the enclosure of China’s sovereignty. And should China refuse any concessions, he will discard the One China policy, sells weapons to Taiwan and push the Taiwanese animals into a military ‘slaughter house’ confrontation against China.

There is a difference between political wisdom, stupidity and business shrewdness. There is nothing shrewd about this old head, let alone any enlightened political wisdom, but downright stupidity. Hopefully, Tsai and her cronies can see thru the dumbness of this old head and not look forward in meeting Team Trump. Beijing should seriously consider Not inviting this Dumbhead for a State visit.
