China’s J-20 Stealth Fighter Dominates in Supersonic Combat

Global Times says in its report “Official media’s ‘official revelation’ of J-20’s detailed parameters? Military experts: Misreading” today that there has been a recent article in a WeChat account under PLA Daily titled “Leader pilot of fighter jets echelon: J-20 dominates in supersonic combat” that reveals the specifications and performance of China’s J-20 stealth fighter jet:

Wingspan: 12.8 meters
Height: 4.45 meters
Empty weight: 17,000 kg
Max. takeoff weight: 37,000 kg
Engines: two WS-15s
Max. speed: 3062.7 km/hour (Mach 2.5)
Range: 6,000 km

The article quotes Zhang Hao, leader pilot of the fighter jet echelon led by J-20s in the parade, as saying in an interview, “(J-20) not bad subsonic too, but once at supersonic speed, it dominates.”

It says that due to its stealth and high speed and maneuverability, J-20 has won 10 to 0 in lots of drills where it competes with non-stealth fighters.

It seems that the speed Mach 2.5 is true as WS-15 is regarded as the best engines for fighter jets. There has been report that China has developed a new and better material for aircraft engine.

Some Chinese military experts do not believe that the above is China’s official disclosure of J-20’s specifications and performance as such details must be China’s top secret. Even the US that advocates transparency, does not make official disclosure of the details of its top fighter F22.

However, this blogger believes that since China’s J-20 is the best, revealing its great capabilities will be a strong deterrence to those who intend to attack China. China’s enemy may develop better fighter jets to defeat J-20 in the future, but China is also developing a next generation of fighter jet much better than J-20. China must have the self-confidence that it is able to develop the best weapons in the world.

Mil.news.sina.com.cn says in its report yesterday that according to the relatively reliable report by an authoritative media, in an interview with a military situation column, a Chinese military expert, a retired senior colonel who was a grade-one test pilot, reveals that a few minor defects in J-20 will not hinder the delivery of the first batch of J-20s to Chinese air force in 2017 because the air force needs them urgently.

Why the urgency?

The US has the wrong strategy of sending 60% of its military to Asia near China instead of having its navy remain outside Chinese weapons’ range to dominate the oceans.

As a result, China has the wise strategy of annihilating the 60% so that the 40% left will not be able to cut China’s trade lifelines in the oceans easily.

That was why I said in my previous post that China needed J-20s to grab air supremacy from F22s urgently. With air supremacy, China’s ballistic missiles, H-6K bombers, J-16 fighters/bombers, other fighter jets and navy will be able to annihilate all US air force and navy within their range if US warplanes and warships do not try to flee.

Annihilation has been PLA’s battle style for decades. It does not want to drive the enemy away. It simply wants to wipe out attacking enemy.

The US is wrong in regarding China’s strategy as A2/AD, i.e. resisting enemy attack. It ignores China’s declaration about China’s strategy being active defense, i.e. attack for defense.

Therefore, China’s plan is to launch thundering all-round attack at US air force and navy in Asia as soon as the US begins to attack China. That is why Xi Jinping has ordered Chinese troops to conduct busy military drills and be always ready to fight. For such a plan, China needs J-20 urgently.

The expert says that of course, J-20 is not 100% perfect now. It must have some minor defects but a fighter jet can be delivered to the military as long as it has no flight problem and is 80% satisfactory. That is because a mature fighter jet has to be perfected through actual military use. There has to be continuous improvement to make it 100% satisfactory. In other words, batch production and commissioning is not the end of research and development.

In response to China’s development of J-20, the US plans to resume production of F22. However, as J-20 is a later development, it has incorporated lots of new technologies that have emerged after the finalization of the design of F22. The existing F22 is no rival to J-20.

To be J-20’s rival, F22 shall also incorporate such technologies. However, there has to be difficult rearrangement of the layout inside F22 to install in a new version of F22 the required equipment of the new technologies. That takes time. In addition, the US has to recruit and train a work force of 20,000 for production and maintenance of F22 and write complicated new software to control it. As a result, China’s J-20 will be perfected long before the emergence of US new F22.

Moreover, a new improved F22 will perhaps cost US$1 billion, which may be too expensive for the US.

The expert seems quite optimistic that China’s J-20 will grab air supremacy from US F22.

China’s New Aircraft Engine Alloy Enables J-20 to Defeat F22

China has developed a much better aircraft engine alloy that will enable its J-20 stealth fighter jet to defeat US F22 and dominate the air.

China’s news.ifeng.com posted a report on June 22 on Professor Chen Guang’s success in developing an aircraft engine material much better than US best alloy for aircraft engine. Chen has achieved the success through long-term research with the funding from Nanjing Polytechnic University and the state’s Program 973.

Prof. Chen’s achievement, Polysynthetic twinned TiAl (PST TiAl) single crystals for high-temperature applications, was published on the Internet at Natural Materials on June 20.

When US GE’s new material Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb (Alloy 4822) was used in its GEnx engine for Boeing 787, it was hailed as a sensational success in the development of aircraft engine materials as it reduces the weight of an aircraft engine by 200 pounds, fuel consumption by 20% and discharge of NOx by 80% and significantly lowered engine noise.

At room temperature, PST TiAl has high tensile ductility of 6.9%, yield strength of 708 MPa and tensile strength of 978 MPa, a wonderful combination of ductility and strength.

What is more important for aircraft engine alloy, at the high temperature of 900℃ its yield and tensile strength is still as high as 637MPa and it has wonderful creep resistance. Its minimum creep rate and lasting life are better than Alloy 4822 by one to two magnitudes. It is hopeful that the allow may be used above 900℃ much higher that the 650~750℃ for Alloy 4822.

China’s New KJ-500 AEW&C Makes F22 Unable to Come Near China

KJ-500 is China’s new generation of AEW&C aircraft. It is the first early warning aircraft in the world that uses digital phased array radar and other new technology that perhaps enables it to detect such stealth warplanes as F22. We do not know exactly whether it is able to detect a stealth warplane as the true functions of KJ-500 is kept strictly confidential.

However, so far it is known that its radar has a range of 470 km. As F22 uses an active phased array radar that has only a range of 300 km, it will be discovered by a KJ-500 470 km away if its radar is switched on long before it is able to detect the KJ-500.

The chain of data it has collected will be sent to the command/control center through communication satellite and then be sent to various combat platforms. Generally speaking, a KJ-500 can direct 100 fighters to fight a coordinated battle.

It has three groups of new-type phased array radar that greatly increase the range of its surveillance, the number of targets it can track and the number and batches of fighter jets it can direct.

All the key parts of KJ-500 including all the parts of its radar are made by China on its own so that China is entirely able to make KJ-500 independently.
